Prints: Polymer Intaglio and Digital Pigment Ink

I started painting in 1971 after graduating from art school with a BFA in printmaking. Although I have been primarily a painter since, I have retained a love for the medium of printmaking, especially etching. Over the years I have done an occasional print but they have been very different from my paintings, basically the difference between black and white and color. It has been my interest to bring my prints closer to my paintings and with recent technological developments in the field of digital printmaking I have satisfied this desire.

The nine prints that I completed during the summer of 2005 originated from recent paintings. A digital image of the painting was brought into the computer where I removed the black component, leaving the essential pure color of the image. Next I drew in pencil on mylar the black, graphic aspect of the image. This mylar drawing was then transferred to a polymer intaglio plate. The digital color was printed to Hahnemule German Etching paper on an Epson Stylus Pro 7500 with archival pigment ink. The black was then printed over the color by the traditional intaglio methods. There was a great deal of alteration and fine tuning between the two printing methods before I was satisfied with the combined results. The prints were completed at the Zea Mays Printmaking Studio in Northampton, MA and I am indebted to its director, Liz Chaflin, and printer, Oliver Kline, for their experience and assistance in helping me realize this project.
